ALERT - Demo 7"/Tape '08

Massachusetts straight edge.

Alert has been one of my favorite bands of '09. I missed out on getting the demo tape when that was released, but was able to give the songs a listen when the band posted them all for free download on their blog.

Those songs got me hooked. I picked up a copy (or three) of the demo when it was pressed onto vinyl earlier this year by Life to Live Records. I managed to trade for the limited tour press they did for the 2009 summer tour (out of 20 copies on black vinyl with a black and white sleeve). I was also able to track down a copy of the test press for the release thanks to Mike, the vocalist of the band. Note the awesome Up Front ripoff they used for the preorder sleeve.

Alert will be releasing a new 7" on Belgian-based Just Another Day Records sometime in early 2010 I believe.

Alert - Demo 2008 (7" Black /200)

 Alert - Demo 2008 (7" Clear /200)

Alert - Demo 2008 (7" Red, Preorder Cover 64/100)

 Alert - Demo 2008 (7" Black, Summer Tour '09 6/20)

Alert - Demo 2008 (7" Black, Test Press 11/18)

Clear and black vinyl is still available on the Life to Life webstore! If you are into the demo, pick up a copy. I would say grab a shirt too, but it looks like they only have youth large left.

v/a - Land of Greed... World of Need

The "Land of Greed... World of Need" 12" was released in 1994 by Watermark Records a new label called Trustkill. This 12" was TK0001, the first released out of 120 or so that the label has done to date (including acts such as Bleeding Through and Eighteen Visions). The release was done as a benefit to the homeless, and includes a list of contact phone numbers in each state  for organizations aiming to aid the homeless.

Unlike most benefit comps, this entire album is a cover of the Embrace LP, each song by a different band. All in the same order they appear on the original release.  Put into perspective, this album has more of an all-star cast than most. Undertow, Outspoken, Groundwork and Sparkmarker all make an appearance, followed up by some "bigger" names like Avail and another up and coming band, Rancid. I love Embrace, but a few of these covers put the originals to shame. Blasphemy? To most, probably. But truth? Indeed.

Tracks:

  1. "Give Me Back" - Nations On Fire
  2. "Dance of Days" - Current
  3. "Building" - Undertow
  4. "Past" - Groundwork
  5. "Spoke" - Outspoken
  6. "Do Not Consider Yourself Free" - Sparkmarker
  7. "No More Pain" - Function
  8. "I Wish I" - Blindfold
  9. "Said Gun" - Avail
  10. "Can't Forgive" - Rancid
  11. 'Money" - Lifetime
  12. "If I Never Thought About It" - Process
  13. "End of a Year" - Farside
  14. "Last Song" - Ashes

Recent Pickups: UNDERTOW

Today marks the best record/mail day ever. I got four records I never thought I would ever be able to find, let alone together in one 13"x13", half crushed (thanks to good old USPS) box. Thankfully everything inside that box was fine, and here is why:

Undertow - The Edge of Quarrel (7" Red/Pink /110)

This is Undertow's first release ever pressed onto vinyl. The "Edge of Quarrel", is a two song EP released in 1991 on Ron Brotherhood's Seattle based Overkill records. The tracks "My Enemy" and "All I Can Give" were exclusive to this release as far as I know, aside from the less than legitimate "Edge of Quarrel" CD released by our favorite German bootleggers at Lost & Found Records. Note the awesome stickers. I am still beyond stoked that I actually got a copy of this 7". I have been actively searching for a copy for about three years. Since there were only 110 pressed (and keep in mind this was about 20 years ago), many of them have probably been lost to edge breaks and growing up. In those three years, I have only been able to find a few people (outside of the band members) that own a copy, all of which declined to sell or trade their copy to me. About a week ago, I finally managed to track down a copy, thanks to one of the guys in Undertow. I have long considered this to the be the Holy Grail of 'tow stuff. Apparently, this 7" was to be the Undertow + Resolution split. There were mastering errors, and 110 copies were pressed on solid red/pink vinyl before the error was discovered, which I assume is the fact that Undertow is on both sides rather than one for 'tow, and the other for Resolution. The same error is present in the "Extinction of all that is Holy" 7", also released by Overkill. However, that 7" is on black vinyl, with a Slayer tribute cover. Why the error pressing was pressed twice on different colors is beyond me. But oh well. Just one more piece of vinyl in the collection.

Undertow - The Edge of Quarrel (7" Clear Red, TEST PRESS)

So there isn't much I can say about this record that I haven't already. When I went into this deal, I originally was just amazed that I had found a normal copy of the 7". Then, out of the blue I get offered a test of it, plus some other stuff that I will discuss in a minute. I have no idea how many of these there are, but judging by how few of the normal pressing there are in circulation, there can't be more than a few of these. My best bet is that they went to the band and Overkill kept a few. But HOLY SHIT, test pressings on color vinyl are legit. Especially a color that wasn't included in the normal pressing.

Undertow - Conditioned/Split with Resolution (7" Black, TEST PRESS)

Again, another record I never thought I would come across, a test pressing of that split with Resolution you have heard so much about. Only this time, it isn't some fucked up Undertow only mispress. This is the real deal. If you aren't familiar with Resolution, it was another project fronted by Ron from Brotherhood, post the B'hood days. They are best known for awesome Motorhead covers, which can be found a couple entries down. After listening to this I had to bust the Resolution 10" out.

Undertow - At Both Ends (12" Black, TEST PRESS)

Ok, now this is fucking mind blowing. The release scientifically known as EXC-009, but commonly referred to as the "At Both Ends" LP. ABE was the first and only full length record released by Undertow before their demise. In my opinion, this album the most important piece of hardcore ever recorded. Sure, this can and will be contested by everyone else (more than likely haha). This album and the songs within it opened the doors to hardcore for me. I guess it was the single album that let me hear the feeling behind the music and the words. I have never listened to any piece of music that was filled with such raw emotion. Fear, confusion, anger, hate and love all wrapped into 25 minutes of insanity. There should never be something that you define yourself with, but this album speaks the words and feelings I have felt through life like I wrote it myself. The progressions of the pains of life, and the process of defining yourself though the both the good and fucked up things that you see and deal with.

Oh yeah, no fucking God. Almost forgot.

In Conclusion:
I don't think I can top this pickups entry. Fuck. I think I am done collecting records. I'll still but new releases and stuff, but I feel like with these pickups, there is nothing I personally want anymore. Until next week at least.

I still owe a huge thanks to Ryan from Undertow, who hooked me up with all of this stuff.

ENGINE Zine #1

I got this in the mail today from good dude down in Chile. Engine zine #1, straight from San Francisco circa 1992. You know its legit when there are ads for upcoming Fugazi and Jawbreaker shows.

Featuring interviews with Seth from Undertow, and a group interview with Still Life/Struggle. Classic political hardcore literature. Covering everything from veganism to homophobia, with some little things you can do to stick it to the assholes around you (See: Consumer Tip - 1)

Anyways, I zipped all of the original scanned images into a file, and I tried my hand at making all of them into a pdf file (Don't mind the watermark on the first page of the pdf file... I don't feel like stealing Adobe writer to make this haha).

Updates

I think I should add more substance to this blog.

Instead of just doing audio uploads, I'll start adding other articles as well. I'll do some show/album reviews here and there. Maybe some awesome vinyl/clothing pick ups I make, if any occur. Once I get a new camera, I'll start taking pictures at shows again also.

Expect more updates, more frequently. I hate having this thing and only adding a new post every few months.

Everything Went Black - Demo '97 and Split 7"

Heavy Seattle jams. Unlike a lot of the old bands that will be posted in here, I actually got a chance to see them a few years back. They played a reunion set at a Himsa show in December of '06. I haven't been able to track down much from this band. I might have a few other randoms tracks at home somewhere. These uploads are credited to Justin from the SITP blog. He posted them on NWHARDCORE awhile back.

Resolution - s/t 10"

I came across this 10" by random luck. I was dealing with a dude in Italy trying to get another variant of the Undertow/Resolution split for my collection, and he made mention of having this record laying around. I hadn't heard anything of them aside from the two songs on the split, so I decided to take it off his hands. Why not?

Post-Brotherhood, early 90s Seattle core. As far as the lineup for this release went, I have no clue. There in no mention on the insert. However, the split with Undertow they did in '90 lists Ron Brotherhood on vocals, Victor H playing drums, Brian C on bass, and "Victor's Brother" (who turns out to be
Dan Hoerner of Sunny Day Real Estate) playing some legit tunes.

They are no Brotherhood, but I'm not complaining. Not a good comparison to make anyways. Two different bands.

Beware of strange and out of place covers.

1) I Seek
2) One Mind
3) Hendrix (Purple Haze)
4) Forced
5) The Last Time
6) Motorhead (Ace of Spades)

Refuse - Demo '89

Alright. I was less than a year old when this tape was created.

Joel yells, Mark plays power chords, Murph sets down some beats, and some Josh guy lays down some bass. The first three guys later teamed up with John on bass, which became Undertow. More on them later.

This demo is full of win. The original owner dubbed the Brotherhood 7" and some Chain of Strength onto the tape following the Refuse songs. Just when I thought it was over, I get blasted by two more of my favorites.

1) Look Before You Leap
2) Refuse
3) Trust
4) Understand
5) Reality
6) Won't Take This No More
7) Too Late
8) Unity
